The Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Department of Maritime Warfare, has held a seminar for college’s students of senior course 46.

The theme of the seminar was “Strengthening capacity towards the prosecution of maritime offences in Nigeria: challenges and way forward”.

Declaring the one-day “Law of the sea” seminar 2024 open on Tuesday at the AFCSC, Jaji Kaduna state, the Commandant of the College, AVM Hassan Alhaji, noted that the theme for the year’s seminar is germane to the improvement of security within the maritime domain and national security as a whole.

Alhaji, who was doubled as the Special Guest of Honour (SGOH) at the seminar, added that the theme was carefully selected specially looking at the country which is undoubtedly making deliberate efforts to curb illegalities in the maritime domain towards enhancing national security and development.

The Commandant therefore, urged all stakeholders to play their roles diligently in order to reap the benefits of sustainable use of resources in the maritime domain.

“This will benefit our dear nation if we are all charged with ensuring a safe maritime environment. Due diligence in the discharge of our duties are critical in this regards,”he said.

He charged the participants to concentrate in other to gain the wealth of experience and knowledge from the resource persons.

Earlier, the Director, Department of Maritime Warfare Cdre. A Muhammed, stated that the seminar marked another milestone in the senior course curriculum.

He noted that the seminar would enable the students to benefit from the rich professional experiences of the seasoned resource persons and maritime stakeholders.

Muhammed, therefore expressed optimism that the outcome of the deliberations of the seminar would positively impact on the legal landscape as far as bringing criminals in the maritime space to justice is concerned.

The Director acknowledged the efforts of the Commandant and other staff of the college for providing a conducive environment which made the seminar possible.

He urged the students to leverage on the knowledge and experience they would gain for the betterment of the maritime domain and the nation in general.

Newsmen reports that the keynote speaker, Capt. OB Anyikwa, delivered a lecture titled “Legal consideration for the Nigerian Navy maritime operations in the implementation of the suppression of piracy and other maritime offences Act 2019”.
