The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has frowned against the recent electricity tariff increment, while tasking the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) on prompt action to salvage the hardship faced by Nigerians.
The National President of the Council, Mr Isah Abubakar, made the call in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday in Kaduna.
Abubakar said that
the outrageous increment in electricity tariff showed lack of humanity, and divorce from the suffering of the citizen.
“The increment shows lack of empathy, it is gross and appalling. president Bola Tinubu musy be on the page of reality of things.
“It is on record that even before he became president, he is disconnected with the masses. His bills since 1999 have always been taken care of by the taxes of poor Lagosians.
“A lot of us are not surprised with his attitude towards the masses. The president needs to understand the purpose of governance is to bring ease and succour to the people, not hardship. It will not be to say the president is more interested in seeing the masses suffer and been suffocated,”Abubakar lamented.
He called on the President to have a rethink on the policy which had dragged people into more suffering than they are already in.
“The removal of fuel subsidies has caused more havoc than we all can imagine. Making things worse is the recent removal of electricity subsidy which shouldn’t be the way to go at this critical time of his government.
“We urgently want the president to avoid any move that will continue to endanger the progress of the country as well as affect the livelihood of Nigerians.
“With the recent policy of increasing electricity tariffs, no doubt, the cost of production, particularly that of small scale will be skyrocketed, which in turn has a negative impact on the life of citizens,”he explained.
